A school of art established in Kyoto in the late Momoyama period (1568-1600). Founded by Hon’ami Kōetsu (1558-1637) and Tawaraya Sōtatsu (ca. 1570-ca. 1643), it was perfected by Ogata Kōrin (1658-1716) and Ogata Kenzan (1663-1743). It has a comprehensive nature including paintings, calligraphy, and crafts, and flourished throughout the Edo period (1603-1868). It features beautiful colors and a decorative style skillfully using gold and silver paint. These artists created works full of decorativeness with bold spatial processing of Yamato-e.
