Maruyama Ōkyo's Morning Glory and Puppies painting on cedar doors
Maruyama Ōkyo (1733-1795) was good at drawing young animals playing. He did not think of young animals as merely a miniature version of the adult, but as motifs with unique characteristics. His puppy pictures seem to have been popular at the time, and there are still many of his puppy works. Originally Morning Glory and Puppies painting was a mural painting of Myogan-in Temple in Aichi Prefecture, but it was rebuilt for a sliding door.
