German library purchases Katsushika Hokusai's "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" for several million euros, to be exhibited in 2025
The Bavarian State Library in Germany announced on April 29 that it has purchased “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” from a private collector for several million euros from the famous “Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji” series by Katsushika Hokusai, an ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period. It will be displayed as a centerpiece at an exhibition of Japanese prints scheduled to be held in 2025.
An early print of The Great Wave off Kanagawa sold for $2.76 million when it was auctioned at Christie’s in New York in March 2023.
