Peonies and Butterfly, painted by Katsushika Hokusai

"Enjoying the Evening Cool Viewing Fireworks at Ryôgoku Bridge", by Katsushika Hokusai

Hokusai attempted to express wind, air, and even time.
In this work, the petals and leaves of a peony in full bloom fill the entire screen in fine detail, and the moment when the butterfly tries to stay on the peony, which is swaying in the wind, is accurately depicted.
This work shows Hokusai’s descriptive ability at a time when photography was not available.
