It depicts people watching fireworks at the opening of the river on May 28, the start of summer in Edo, and the bustle of freak shows and food shops temporarily set up along the riverbank in anticipation of their purchases. The fireworks lasted about three months from that day. The work is also meaningful as a source of information on the customs of the time, and was so popular that editions with different colors were published.
